A Little Book on Men is a very welcome attempt to claim for masculinity some of the intellectual space in the gender debate. It does well to capture the problems facing men, with wit and gentle subversion, and a very effective illustrated narrative. However, it risks seeing masculinity through an academic feminist lens—which can mean too much oppression, patriarchy and sexual objectification (and the contemporary confusions they engender), and too few pointers to an ethical, responsible way forward for masculinity. Still, it is a timely book that deserves to succeed and help establish the ground rules for understanding masculinity in its various forms. That understanding would be good news for men and women alike.
