There are equally amusing accounts, for example, of ways of dealing with wives of senior officers; and the incident from which the title of the book is taken—handling irate Naga sadhus during the Kumbh Mela—is among the most diverting. The bit about the lady visitor confronted by a naked Naga in the room of one of the authors, herself a woman, was delicious.

The book has an energy and enthusiasm that older retired officers’ memoirs often lack, which is welcome. Perhaps the authors should have paid less attention to trivia, and given readers more glimpses of a side of the service few get to see, but on the whole the book is a most pleasant read.
