Kumar takes all the familiar battlefields in Indo-Pak relations—war, Kashmir, religion, secularism, education, history, and culture—contextualising each against ideas of modernity, globalisation, new forms of conflict and identity, and the role of elites and educational systems in constructing national and public memory. In simple and accessible arguments, the book helps both the Indian and the Pakistani reader to interrogate their own country, independent of its relationship with the other. An excellent read, especially for the younger generation in both countries, who Kumar says are often mystified by the stories they are told about their own nations.
