The Indian Government has backed down from the hard stand on making all cars electric-only by 2030 and it has opened up opportunities for manufacturers to show new technologies which could fill the gap till electric mobility for the masses becomes a reality. Hyundai, after showcasing the Ioniq Electric at the Auto Expo 2018 has now showcased its flagship Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV), the Nexo, in the country.

Shown during the India Korea Business Summit 2018 at New Delhi, the Nexo is the first part of an 18-car eco-friendly car lineup which Hyundai will launch across the world by 2025.

“The creation of fuel cell electric vehicle - Hyundai Nexo SUV and the global EV - Ioniq is a significant leap forward for Hyundai Motor as it intensifies our efforts to produce highly efficient, eco-friendly vehicles. Hyundai as a caring brand is continuously innovating in clean and connected mobility solutions to make a long-term positive transformation for our future generations,” said S H Kim, Vice President, Namyang R&D Centre, Hyundai Motor Company.

Based on an all-new platform, the Hyundai Nexo promises more space and better performance thanks to the better integration of the fuel-cell system and a lightweight structure. Hyundai claims that the Nexo can travel up 609-kilometres on a single tank of hydrogen. Powered by an electric motor developing 163PS/395Nm, the Nexo can accelerate from 0-100kmph in 9.5-seconds.

The Nexo is also semi-autonomous, with driver assist systems like Blind-spot View Monitor, Lane Following Assist, Highway Driving Assist and Remote Smart Parking Assist. Hyundai also showcased the Nexo’s air purification capability at the Korea Summit; air purifiers in the car can filter a claimed 99.9 per cent of particulates in the air as it drives along, making the cabin one of cleanest places to be in highly polluted cities.

Hyundai has not announced any plans to launch either the Nexo or the Ioniq in India, for now. The latest demonstration by the company in India is a reiteration of Hyundai’s ability to make eco-friendly cars, considering hybrid and electric cars are the future of mobility in India.
