A Mediclaim policy covers every ailment under the sun.

Not true. Pre-existing ailments are not covered.

Cataract, benign, prostatic, hypertrophy, hysterectomy for menorrhagia or fibromyoma hernia (v) hydrocele, congenital internal diseases, fistula in anus, piles, sinusitis and related disorders are excluded from cover only for the first year of the policy.

Cost of spectacles, contact lenses, hearing aids, dental treatment, surgery are not covered at all under this policy—unless these injuries, diseases and medical states require hospitalisation, convalescence or rest cure. Also not covered are congenital external diseases, sterility, venereal diseases that are directly or indirectly related to AIDS, pregnancy and circumcision—unless it is necessary under certain circumstances alone.

Further, intentional self-injury and use of intoxicants (like alcohol and drugs) are also not covered.
