Pepsi Gets Spaced Out

The Other Guy Blinked,

And what better way to express the futuristic appeal than through space imagery? So Pepsi's making the first-ever commercial to be shot in space. The ad will feature two cosmonauts of the Russian Mir space station space walking 200 miles above the earth with a large-scale replica of the new Pepsi Blue can. The can, made from space-grade nylon, was sent into space on May 5 on the Russian Progress rocket which docked with Mir two days later. The can will not be left to litter space; it will be brought back to earth.

In case anyone still doesn't get the point, Pepsi has struck a deal with George Lucas, creator of the Star Wars movie series, for use of Star Wars characters to promote Pepsi. The fact that Lucas is planning a fourth Star Wars movie should also help Pepsi, which needs some blockbuster ideas to combat the huge publicity Coke will garner when the Centennial Olympics begin soon at Coke's home town Atlanta.

Just one point, but. Pepsi and Enrico appear not to have noticed that the events depicted in the Star Wars series happen, as the very first line of the movie Star Wars tells us, in a galaxy far, far away, a long time ago. But that's nit-picking.
