A couple of days back, Yamaha released an action-packed video on its official YouTube channel. The video shows us glimpses of a scooter with the name ‘Rally’ on the side of it. Now, while Yamaha does not wish to disclose any more, we went back in time, to the Auto Expo 2018. There, overshadowed by the launch of the new Yamaha R15 v3.0 and the 2018 Yamaha R3, sat a colourful scooter. Called the Yamaha Ray ZR 110 Street Rally edition, it carries the exact same bodywork minus the snazzy graphics as the one teased in the video. So, there you have it. Yamaha looks all set to launch the Ray ZR 110 Street Rally edition.
What's different?
The bodywork, for one. To keep up with its sporty name, the new scooter gets a sportier front end. While the Ray ZR’s front bodywork came with fins on the sides, the Street Rally edition gets it on the top fairing. While they look more of the cosmetic variety, we suspect they should serve as knuckle guards too. There are also faux air ducts integrated in the front. The rest of the bodywork though, including the large exhaust muffler, looks like it has been carried over from the stock Ray ZR.
We expect the production bike to feature an all-digital instrument cluster similar to the one shown on the concept bike. It might also come with new mirrors.
What it misses out on, compared to the Auto Expo concept scooter?
The snazzy graphics. We loved the sticker work on the concept scooter with the gold coloured wheels and hope it will debut in an even sportier limited edition variant in the future. For now, the teased scooter seems to come in a plain silver colour scheme. We expect more colour options though. It seems to miss out on the sporty two-tone red and black seat as well.
The concept scooter also had a smoked headlamp, while the one in the video does not.
Going by the video, the scooter seems to get the stock handlebar grips, and not the anodised bars and adjustable levers from the concept.
More disappointing is that it won't come with the gas-charged rear damper that debuted on the concept scooter. Instead, this one makes do with a hydraulic shock absorber.
What to expect?
Expect a sportier looking 110cc scooter with underpinnings carried over from the standard Yamaha Ray ZR. That includes a 113cc air-cooled single-cylinder motor that makes 7.2PS of power and 8.1Nm of torque. Given the changes to the bodywork, weight may slightly vary from the Ray ZR’s 105kg (kerb, drum). It gets 10-inch wheels with a front disc brake option. Since the scooter displaces less than 125cc, it is exempt from the government regulation that mandates ABS/CBS for two-wheelers above 125cc. Suspension setup would include telescopic front forks and a single rear shock absorber.
We expect the Yamaha Ray ZR Street Rally edition to be launched by the end of this month and to carry a slight premium over the disc brake-equipped Ray ZR’s price tag of Rs 55,898 (ex-showroom Delhi).
