IIT Madras Research Park , IIT Madras

IIT-Madras Research Park an independent company set-up by IIT-Madras, has been in the fore front to promote innovation-based technology start-up ecosystems through its various initiatives. The start-up incubation framework at IIT Madras, comprises a sandbox known as Centre for Innovation (CFI), a pre-incubation cell called NIRMAAN, both of which are located within IIT Madras, the Research Park which is outside of the IIT-Madras campus, has four Technology Business Incubators (TBI), Incubation Cell (IC), Rural TBI, Bio Tech TBI and Med Tech TBI. The Research parks also hosts several corporate companies that leverages the expertise of faculty, the skill set of students/research scholars and the various labs/infrastructure at IIT-M.

Details below

  • IIT Madras Incubation Cell (IITMIC) in the IIT Madras Research Park. It has an 80% success rate with Startups!
  • Started with a 400 Cr debt, returned 600 Cr in total (debt interest and principal)
  • IITMIC didn’t take any grants as they said they wanted to experience and showcase how to create a sustainable bootstrapped business for startups – they grew from the ground up in a lean way!
  • IITMIC as of 2023 end had a portfolio of 351 deep tech startups valued at Rs 45,000 crore ($5.4 billion). It has led to 8000-9000 direct jobs as well!
  • Technology supported other innovative sports products/services offering

Success Stories

  • Their start-ups include known names such as Ather Energy (750-800 MN $ valuation, so unicorn status is imminent) – they built everything, right from the chassis to the motor at IITMIC
  • Agnikul Cosmos and the unicorn Uniphore (was a non-IIT Startup)
  • MediBuddy - Raised $200 million to date and is currently valued at close to $500 million.
  • Their incubated startups have raised Rs 9500 Cr of funds and generated 1,300 patents.

Fun Facts on IITMIC

  • The survival rate of startups is 80% v/s 4-6% normally. They plan to close the financial year with 366 patents and launch 100 startups in 2024!
  • IITMIC also owns 1% equity in many of these companies and they are making ₹50-60 crore a year! (Equity does create wealth after all!)
  • The 10x Plan They are not stopping here - 10x plan.
  • A vision plan till 2030.

The first element of the plan is to raise the number of incubatees to 1,000 a year, from about 45 today Towards this, they aim to partner with 50 to 100 incubators in tier-2, tier-3, and tier-4 institutes and nurture their incubates to succeed. Towards this, the Cell will partner with a hundred incubators in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. The second element of the plan is to nurture around 50 products born out of Indian R&D so that each earns annual revenues of ₹1,000 crore. The third pedal of the vision is to get Indian technologists among the top 2 percent in any area and the fourth is to work towards ensuring that India is recognized “among the top five countries” in five sectors. Conclusion - One of the Ultimate Startup incubators/investors is the IIT Madras Incubation Cell (IITMIC)! Source: Aditya Kondawar , partner and VP Complete Circle Capital
