AI (artificial intelligence) has become a pervasive topic of conversation in recent times, encompassing a myriad of capabilities. It has the power to predict weather patterns, forecast real estate values, produce exquisite art and poetry, and much more. Beyond these creative applications, AI also possesses the capacity to bestow cars with autonomous abilities, guide robots through intricate housecleaning tasks, and navigate agricultural landscapes for strawberry harvesting. The architects behind infusing artificial intelligence into robots are known as roboticists. One prominent figure in this realm is Karthikeyan Yuvaraj. Karthikeyan has played a pivotal role as a roboticist within Alphabet, Google's parent organization, contributing to advancing cutting-edge robotics and computer vision solutions tailored for industrial contexts. Also, the startup Vicarious AI, which he joined as one of the founding roboticists, was acquired by Google in 2022 for its groundbreaking technology in the intersection of AI and robotics. His body of work, spanning publications and patents in robotics and AI, boasts over 190 citations. Karthikeyan's journey into robotics began in Neyveli, a quaint town in Tamil Nadu, India. His childhood fascination with robots, sparked by the likes of Star Wars, became the cornerstone of his enduring passion for this field.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) stands as a research and development institution under the umbrella of the United States Department of Defense. It shoulders the responsibility of pioneering emerging technologies intended for military application. Motivated by the Fukushima nuclear catastrophe, DARPA initiated the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) with the objective of engineering semi-autonomous ground-based robots capable of executing intricate tasks within hazardous and compromised human-engineered environments. Among the participants were distinguished entities such as NASA, Boston Dynamics, and Lockheed Martin. Karthikeyan embarked on his journey as a roboticist by engaging in the DRC. His involvement centered on creating a vision system for the humanoid robot DRC Hubo, equipping it with the capacity to drive vehicles, ascend ladders, manipulate drills, and more. The event garnered extensive global media attention, attracting prominent names like National Geographic. Notably, this competition substantially influenced the advancement of research and innovation within the realm of vision-centric robotic manipulation. Karthikeyan's inaugural research contributions materialized in the form of scholarly papers presented at international robotics conferences and the esteemed Intelligent Service Robotics journal published by Springer.

The efficient operation of a country's logistics and supply chain network is crucial for its economic advancement, trade relationships, job opportunities, and resilience in the face of challenges, underscoring its significance for the nation's overall well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted this sector, with warehouse access restrictions preventing workers from performing their duties, and domestic goods movement experienced hindrances and delays due to pandemic-related constraints. The integration of robotics in these warehouses is an essential innovation and represents a strong strategy to combat the pandemic's impact. Karthikeyan has extensively focused on developing advanced robotics and AI solutions for the logistics and supply chain domain. According to him, creating a robotic system capable of efficiently recognizing, grasping, and relocating objects is pivotal for various warehousing tasks, such as palletizing, depalletizing, bin picking, kitting, and packet picking. After the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC), Karthikeyan joined Honeywell as a Roboticist in the special projects group, with a primary objective of building advanced robotics systems for warehousing applications. One notable application involved creating a robotic truck unloader. Manual unloading of cargo from trucks is physically demanding, placing significant stress on the human back, often leading to serious injuries such as herniated discs, musculoskeletal disorders, shoulder/knee injuries, etc. Automating this task through robotics not only enhances efficiency but also fosters a healthier work environment for employees. A truck unloader, essentially a massive tank-like robot, ascends the back of a truck to unload cargo. Karthikeyan played a key role as the tech lead in developing the visual sensing of this robot. The vision system he pioneered enabled the robot to navigate within the trailer autonomously, precisely locate and grasp cargo, and place it on a moving conveyor. This innovation resulted in numerous granted patents in the USA and globally. Considering the limited innovation in the field of robotic truck unloading, Karthikeyan's inventions have garnered numerous citations and have been a source of inspiration for tech giants like Amazon and Google."

Karthikeyan Yuvaraj's notable contributions have garnered recognition from prestigious organizations. He achieved Senior Membership in the IEEE, a distinguished engineering institution, a distinction held by a select few among its extensive 400,000+ members. This prestigious grade signifies substantial experience, professional maturity, and noteworthy documented accomplishments. Additionally, Karthikeyan holds the esteemed position of an Eminent Fellow member of the Scholars Academic and Scientific Society of India. His excellence was acknowledged with the "2023 Scientist of the Year" award by Canada's International Achievements Research Center and the "2022 International Achievers Award" by the Indian Achievers Forum. Further showcasing his professional prowess, in 2023, the Indian Achievers Forum honored him with the Golden Pinnacle Award for his outstanding performance in his field. Karthikeyan's achievements extend to the highly coveted WCRC Leader award, a distinguished recognition for his exceptional contributions to the robotics and AI space.
