A Pakistan court on Saturday convicted former Prime Minister Imran Khan in the Toshakhana Case and sentenced him to three years of imprisonment.
Khan, also the Chairman of the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI), is accused in dozens of cases besides the Toshakhana case.
The court also slapped a fine of Rs 1,00,00 on Khan, reported Dawn newspaper.
The Dawn reported, "An Islamabad trial court on Saturday declared PTI Chairman Imran Khan guilty of 'corrupt practices' in the Toshakhana case and sentenced him to three years in prison. The court also imposed a fine of Rs100,000 on the PTI chief."
The Toshakhana is a government department that is in charge of valuable gifts received by government officials. Khan was accused of not disclosing gifts presented to Toshakhana. It was also alleged that there were irregularities in sale of some of these gifts. Now, Khan has been convicted and sentenced to three years of imprisonment in the case.
Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Humayun Dilawar ruled that charges against Khan in the Toshakhana Case were proven, reported Dawn.
“Imran Khan deliberately submitted fake details [of Toshakhana gifts] to the ECP and is found guilty of corrupt practices,” said Dilawar in judgement and sentenced Khan to jail for three years under Section 174 of the Election Act, reported Dawn.
Shortly after the conviction, Khan's party PTI said in a tweeted that he had been arrested and was being moved to Kot Lakhpat Jail, Lahore.
Khan is the latest Prime Minister of Pakistan to be set to go to jail in corruption cases. Before Khan, Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, and Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy were jailed under various charges, reported Dawn newspaper.
