Carl Nassib, the first openly gay active player in the National Football League (NFL), announced his retirement from professional football on Wednesday. Nassib, who made history with his courageous decision to come out publicly in June 2021 while playing for the Las Vegas Raiders, said he would like to now shift his focus towards his philanthropic endeavors and add a new chapter in his life.
Sharing the news on Instagram, Nassib wrote, “This is a bittersweet moment for me but after seven seasons and just over 100 NFL games I am officially retiring from football to focus on my company Rayze." Rayze is an innovative app that connects people with nonprofit organizations that align with their interests and geographical location.
The NFL player added, “It really feels like just yesterday starting out as a walk-on at Penn State. Football has given me more than I ever could have imagined. I can truly hang up my helmet for the last time knowing I gave it everything I had."
In his retirement announcement, Nassib extended his gratitude to some key figures who had supported him along the way. He thanked God, his family, and his friends for their unwavering support, even when he didn't fully realize it himself. Adding to the list, he acknowledged his agent, Brian Ayrault, as the first person in the football industry with whom he shared his truth.
Nassib also expressed his appreciation for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization, and Jason Licht and John Spytek, for reigniting his career on two separate occasions.
Nassib's journey to the NFL was an arduous one. The 30-year-old athlete began his NFL career as a third-round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2016.
He offered words of inspiration to those who aspire to achieve their dreams, saying, "To anyone who has a dream of being the best, never let anyone convince you it’s impossible. Be the best you can be in everything you do. Work hard, make smart decisions, and be kind to others."
Towards the end of his announcement, Nassib shared that he will be working alongside the NFL with its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
