Wildfires that tore through Hawaii's second-largest island, Maui, nearly completely destroyed the historically significant Lahaina town and the island. 36 people have died as a result of the fires, and hundreds more have been forced to flee.
What triggered the fires?
The source of the wildfires wasn't immediately known, but according to experts, they may be linked to Hurricane Dora.
The National Hurricane Centre said that on Tuesday, Hurricane Dora passed 700 miles south of Honolulu and generated winds of 130 mph.
The Maui fires started in vegetation but quickly spread into residential areas due to the high winds that swept the island at speeds exceeding 60 mph. The fire quickly consumed the coastal town of Lahaina, moving across crossroads with astounding speed and intensity.
The Hawaii wildfires have grown in magnitude as a result of a variety of factors, with strong winds and unfavorable weather conditions playing a significant role. The flames' exact cause is still unknown, however their outbreak occurred during a period of time when there were strong winds and low humidity levels. The National Weather Service had earlier issued a warning that these circumstances would increase the likelihood of a fire spreading quickly.
