A developing storm system is expected to deliver widespread rain, damaging winds, severe storms, and even snow to the eastern half of the US this weekend. The Fox Forecast Center expects a disruptive storm that will impact millions of Americans, creating travel trouble and leading to power outages along the East Coast. The storm comes as a trough of low pressure rolls out of the western US on Friday, triggering the development of a surface low over the central Plains. This initial low will kick off the event with widespread rain and some snow in the Upper Midwest by Saturday.
Heavy rainfall starting Friday
Starting on Friday, a wide region of moderate to heavy rain is expected to develop that will move eastward toward the East Coast and from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes. While the hazard of flash flooding moves eastward from the Florida Panhandle up to the mid-Atlantic and most of the Northeast on Sunday, it will still be a concern throughout the Gulf Coast to portions of the mid-Mississippi and lower Ohio valleys on Saturday.
Dangerously high winds on Sunday, Monday
On Sunday and Monday, dangerously high winds are predicted to gust between 30 and 40 mph in some areas of the Plains and Rockies. On Saturday, there may be some snow on the northwest side of the low that extends from the Midwest and north-central Plains into the Great Lakes.
