The MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) 2023 held at the Prudential Center in New Jersey, were simply one big concert with a handful of prizes given out in between performances.
Taylor Swift won, there was an amazing Shakira medley, an NSYNC reunion, and so many incredible performances at the MTV VMAs 2023. The show, which aired live, also honored the greatest in Latin music and the 50th anniversary of hip-hop.

Olivia Rodrigo's Cloning Army
Olivia Rodrigo's highly awaited sophomore album, GUTS, was released last week on September 8, and she took the stage at the VMAs for her first award show performance for the album’s promotion. Rodrigo sang the lead song, "Vampire," amid a backdrop of pyrotechnics that briefly appeared to be malfunctioning but finally appeared to be all part of the plan.
Taylor Swift’s Appearance in NSYNC Reunion
Joey Fatone, Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Lance Bass, and Chris Kirkpatrick of NSYNC reunited at the start of the ceremony on Tuesday night to present Taylor Swift with the award for best pop video for "Anti-Hero."Swift was seated next to Ice Spice, and she was the first awardee of the night, winning Best Pop for "Anti-Hero." For the same video, she went on to win Song of the Year, Best Direction, and Video of the Year. It was her 32nd VMA win.
Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's Performance
Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion have both lately stepped away from the spotlight, but they returned together with an electrifying performance of their new collaboration, "Bongos," the video for which was released last week.
Shakira's Video Vanguard Medley
Shakira took the stage to demonstrate why she is the recipient of this year's Video Vanguard Award. Throughout her decade-long performance, she sang classics from her broad musical catalog, including "Ojos As," "Objection (Tango)," and "Whenever, Wherever" from the early 2000s. She was able to easily move into her new tracks, such as her collaboration with Rauw Alejandro on "Te Felicito" and her collaboration with Karol G on "TQG," which went on to win a VMAs.
Karol G's VMAs Debut
The Colombian sensation brought the bright to the stage in her first-ever VMAs performance, offering a sultry performance of her 2023 singles "OKI DOKI" and "Tá OK (Remix)." Later that night, she received her first VMA for her "TQG" collaboration with Shakira.
Most Surprising Win: Anitta
Anitta won the award for Best Latin, beating out some of the genre's most popular performers, including the world's largest artist, Bad Bunny. She defeated Rosala, Mexican rising star Peso Pluma, and Karol G. The Brazilian superstar performed her tracks "Used to Be," "Funk Rave," and "Grip" flawlessly, and subsequently joined K-pop group TOMORROW X TOGETHER on stage.
MTV, like the Grammys earlier this year, celebrated hip-hop's 50th anniversary with a time tour through some of the genre's greatest songs and artists.
The performers included Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and LL Cool J, who opened with "The Message" and flowed into “Mama Said Knock You Out" before concluding with "Walk This Way."
