Kennewick will hold a tribute at the Southridge Sports and Events Complex, which houses a piece of World Trade Center steel column. Community members will gather Monday morning to memorialize those who died in the 9/11 terror attacks.
According to reports, the 35-foot-tall, 6,000-pound steel column was retrieved in a collaborative effort by the city, Lampson International, and the Ports of New York and New Jersey.
It was dedicated on September 11, 2011, the 10th anniversary of the assault. The ceremony, which begins at 6:30 a.m., commemorates the 22nd anniversary of the terrorist assault that murdered 3,000 people at the New York World Trade Centers, the Pentagon, and aboard hijacked airplanes.
Members of the Tri-Cities Professional Firefighters Honor Guard, as well as officers from the Kennewick Police and Benton County Sheriff's departments, will form the Honor Guard. The memorial will be open throughout the morning, allowing members of the community to join as they are able. The memorial will be the site of all events and is located at 2901 Southridge Blvd., right off the restaurant and baseball field parking lots on the complex's east side.
