When Katy Perry and Russell Brand first started dating in 2009, the couple's brief engagement attracted a lot of media attention. When they ended their marriage just 14 months after being married, the scrutiny on their relationship grew even more intense.
The British comedian, now 48, is under investigation for alleged rape, sexual assault, and emotional abuse committed when he was at the height of his celebrity by four different women. The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4's Dispatches collaborated on an investigation that revealed these claims.
Brand has denied all of the accusations that have been made against him, ranging from 2006 to 2013, and has emphasized that all of his prior relationships have been “absolutely always consensual”.
Perry, who is 38 years old, has not made any public statements on the accusations made against her ex-husband. She has, however, previously spoken about the events leading up to her breakup with Brand and revealed that he sent her a text to end things.
“He’s a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him. Let’s just say I haven’t heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me .”, Perry revealed to Vogue in 2013.
She also said that Brand’s humor is hysterical in some ways until he started making jokes about her and she didn’t know she was in the audience, because she had come to surprise him at one of his shows.
“At first when I met him he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they’re like, I can’t handle the equalness,” she added.
Brand and the singer first met backstage at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), where Brand was both presenting and filming sequences for the 2010 movie Get Him to the Greek.
The following year, claims surfaced that Perry had tossed a bottle in Brand's direction, leading to rumors of romance between the two. They started dating soon after this occurrence and finally were married in a lavish ceremony at the Ranthambore Tiger Sanctuary in Rajasthan, India. Brand made a dramatic entrance to the wedding riding an elephant. But in 2012, they filed for divorce, alleging "irreconcilable differences."
