Over the last few years, tattoos have become significantly popular in the United States. According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center in 2023, 32 percent of Americans have at least one tattoo as a permanent work on their bodies. Many people get tattoos as a way to pay respect and tribute to their loved ones and religions.
Although a tattoo can be a powerful means of expression, there are various hidden risks that come along with getting a tattoo. The World Dental Federation (FDI) has provided significant insights into the hidden risks associated with getting tattoos, shedding light on important issues.
Additionally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have underlined some crucial concerns and health risks that one should definitely consider while getting tattooed.
The importance of sterilized water
Water plays an essential role in either creating tattoo ink or diluting it. Usually, tattoo artists use water to dilute the tattoo ink to give the client their desired shade.
Ink manufacturers and tattoo artists may believe that using distilled or reverse osmosis water (a filtration method that removes large particles) is sufficient to safely create or dilute tattoo inks, but this is incorrect. The ink can be contaminated by any kind of non-sterile water, resulting in infections in those tattooed with it.
Allergic Reactions
Various chemical compounds present in tattoo inks may cause allergic reactions in individuals. People with allergic reactions may experience issues such as redness, itching, and swelling around the tattooed area. In some cases, the reactions may become severe, requiring medical attention.
Skin Infection
Unsterile tattooing equipment, such as needles, can contaminate the skin, leading to skin infections. These infections may also develop if you neglect to properly care for the wound from a recent tattoo.
These are some of the major complications that one could face after getting inked. Hence, it is always advisable for individuals to research and study every aspect of risks before getting inked.
