And if you want to order a gun, virtually any kind of gun, all you have to do is go to the village of Darra, just outside Peshawar. Almost every house there is a gun factory where they copy an astounding variety of guns with the crudest of tools. It has been supplying weapons to the entire tribal belt for over a century. And Islamabad dare not do anything about it. No wonder the Kalashnikov cult prevails in the area. Drugs and prostitution are also rife. Mian Asghar Khan of Peshawar University, who has been researching the impact of Afghan refugees on the NWFP, tells me that there are two million such refugees in over 200 camps, quite a few of whom have settled down permanently in Pakistan. "Initially, they were welcomed by the locals, but no longer...they have brought the jehadi culture and terrorism into Pakistan," he says.
