Urban Palimpsest

It has been a "must see" for conquerors. Nadir Shah, who helped himself to the Kohinoor, followed by Ahmad Shah Abdali, among others. It has seen the horrors of the Mutiny, Partition and the anti-Sikh riots of 1984. It's bad enough for me, from Lucknow, but I wonder what the person from Bahraich or Barabanki must be feeling when he goes to Delhi to visit the MP he helped get elected. The huge house he is living in in Windsor Place, the cars, the air conditioners and the come-tomorrow-the-MP-is-busy-today reprimand from the forbidding guard.

Seeing New Delhi one realises that Mr Jinnah was only partly right with his two-nation theory. There are two nations alright, but they exist right here in India - of the haves and the have-nots.
