Senior AAP leader and ex-Gujarat AAP chief Gopal Italia was arrested by the Surat Crime Branch on Monday over derogatory remarks made against state Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi during a rally before the Gujarat election in November last year. He was granted bail soon after the arrest.
According to reports, Italia allegedly addressed Sanghavi as “Drugs Sanghvi” and Paatil as an "ex-bootlegger". The complaint that was filed by a BJP worker said that Italia defamed a respectful person.
In October last year, Italia was arrested by Delhi Police as he appeared before the National Commission for Women (NCW) pertaining a video where he was heard using derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma summoned him for using “abusive & indecent language” against PM Modi and said his comment was “gender biased, misogynist & condemnable.” Amidst the huge protests by the party workers outside the NCW office, Italia presented his case.
He was also arrested in December in an alleged case of hurting religious sentiments, and later got bail. The case pertains to a statement he had made at a campaign rally in Dwarka. The complainant in the case alleged that Italia made an offensive remark about Lord Krishna.
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal who was questioned by the CBI yesterday for his role in the alleged excise policy case took to Twitter and said, "The BJP is so shocked by the spectacular performance of the Aam Aadmi Party in Gujarat that it has now arrested our Gujarat leader Gopal Italia. Now BJP has only one aim, how to finish Aam Aadmi Party. These people will put everyone in jail one by one."
