1961-1970
- 1963-64: Begins his political career as an activist of the Congress and soon becomes a block president
- 1967: Elected to J&K Assembly on a Congress ticket
- 1969: Following a rift between his mentor G.M. Sadiq and the Syed Mir Qasim group in the Congress, joins the latter
1971-1980
- 1971: Inducted as deputy minister for Irrigation in the state cabinet headed by Mir Qasim
- 1972: Re-elected on Congress ticket as MLA and becomes the state’s education minister
- 1974: Following differences with chief minister Mir Qasim, quits from his post. Expelled from the party, forms a dissident group.
- 1975: Comes close to Sheikh Abdullah, when the latter becomes the J&K chief minister
- 1976: Joins National Conference
- 1977: Leaves National Conference for not being accommodated in the state cabinet by Sheikh Abdullah. Joins the Janata Party on the eve of what he called Kashmir’s "fairest ever" assembly elections and wins a seat.
- 1978: Quits Janata party
- 1979: Floats new regional party, All J&K People’s Conference, which advocates full internal autonomy for the state

1991-2000
- 1995: In the wake of dwindling mass support, decides to join secessionist forces. Subsequently joins the APHC as one of its founding executive committee members.
- 1998: Begins getting disillusioned with policies pursued by secessionist leaders. Feels APHC has become a mouthpiece of the militants.
2001-May 21, 2002
- 2000: Slams the militants for not responding positively to New Delhi’s ceasefire offer
- April 2002: Makes a statement in Dubai that foreign mercenaries have no role to play in Kashmir.
- May 21, 2002: Assassinated at a public meeting in Srinagar.
