Fervour marked the Eid-al-Adha, also known as Bakrid (Bakra Eid) celebrations in Tamil Nadu on Thursday with several thousands of Muslims participating in mass prayers.
In Chennai, Muslims gathered in large numbers at the Don Bosco school grounds and offered prayers while similar congregations marked the occasion in several parts of the state including Tirupathur, Dindigul, Vellore, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts.
The office of the Chief Kazi to Tamil Nadu Government Dr Salanuddin Mohammed Ayub had announced that Idul Adha (Bakrid) will be celebrated on June 29.
Conveying his heartiest greetings and best wishes to the Muslim brothers and sisters, on the occasion, Governor R N Ravi said the Festival of Sacrifice, Eid-ul-Adha signified the utmost sacrifice made by the devout leader, complying with the Almighty’s will for humanity.
"Let us, as a family, build a peaceful, aatmanirbhar and harmonious India by strengthening the true spirit of empathy, brotherhood and compassion," the Governor said in his message.Chief Minister M K Stalin, AIADMK general secretary K Palaniswami and several leaders extended their greetings on the occasion.
Many Muslims symbolically sacrifice a goat or a sheep as an act of qurbani. The members of the Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamath (TNTJ) which has over 800 mosques under its control across the state, arranged to provide food to the poor to light up their moments of happiness during this festival.
