The ongoing political tussle surrounding the Manipur incident has escalated into a heated war of words between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition. On Saturday, the BJP raised concerns over atrocities against women in states like Rajasthan and West Bengal, while questioning the opposition's apparent "silence" on these matters. The opposition, in turn, has been demanding a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Manipur situation inside Parliament, followed by an unhindered debate in both houses, according to PTI.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur, representing the BJP, accused the opposition of resorting to politics while seeking a fair debate on the Manipur incident. Thakur highlighted a long list of heinous crimes against women in states ruled by non-BJP parties, such as Rajasthan, West Bengal, and Bihar, to counter the opposition's demands for accountability.
In response, the Congress, along with other opposition parties, accused the ruling party of using diversionary tactics and evading meaningful discussions in Parliament. The opposition has been critical of the government's handling of the situation in Manipur, demanding a transparent inquiry and accountability for the incident.
Adding to the charged atmosphere, Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani was embroiled in a Twitter spat with Congress leaders, with both sides trading accusations and defending their respective positions.
The Manipur incident in question involves a video that surfaced on May 4, showing two women from rival communities being subjected to violence and assault. Five people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
