Residents in Jhanjra area of Uttarakhand's Dehradun were evacuated on Tuesday morning after some people complained of breathlessness caused by a chlorine gas leak.
The gas leaked from cylinders kept in an open field, officials said, adding that security officials rushed people to safety immediately after being informed about the incident and no damage was reported.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dehradun, Ajay Singh, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other security forces rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the incident.
"On receiving information about people facing difficulty in breathing due to leakage in the chlorine cylinder kept in the empty plot in the Jhanjra area of Prem Nagar police station in Dehradun, Police, NDRF, SDRF and fire team reached the spot and are taking action for safe disposal," news agency ANI quoted Singh as saying.
The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) commandant and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear experts, with the necessary equipment, rushed to the spot and found out that two of the six cylinders kept in the field were leaking, officials added.
A joint operation was undertaken to stop the gas leakage and remove the cylinders elsewhere, the officials said.
