Congress MP Pramod Tiwari responded to the recent statement made by Himachal Pradesh PWD minister Vikramaditya Singh regarding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Tiwari expressed his belief that the opinions of individuals hold no significance outside of the decisions made during party-level strategy meetings. He further accused the central government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), of attempting to divert attention from pressing issues by introducing the UCC as a topic of discussion. Tiwari emphasized that the final decision on the matter would be made in the best interest of India's 1.4 billion citizens, after thorough deliberation during the upcoming meeting.
Vikramaditya Singh had previously deviated from the party line by openly endorsing the UCC while cautioning against its politicization. On his Facebook page, he declared his complete support for the Uniform Civil Code, emphasizing its necessity for maintaining India's unity and integrity. However, he emphasized the importance of avoiding any political exploitation of the issue.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a recent meeting in Bhopal, advocated strongly for the implementation of a UCC, a unified set of laws governing marriage, divorce, and inheritance applicable to all religious communities. In opposition to the BJP's stance, the Congress party has voiced its dissent, asserting that the BJP's motives are rooted in the intention to divide the population, according to media reports
Meanwhile, the neighboring state of Uttarakhand, under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, announced its plans to introduce a common civil code. A committee appointed by the Uttarakhand government, consisting of members affiliated with the BJP, revealed that they have already prepared a draft for the proposed legislation, preceding Dhami's declaration.
