The CPI(M )on Tuesday said it was contemplating to move an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra, during the parliament’s budget session.

The plan comes in the wake of four senior-most judges of the Supreme Court complaining about arbitrary allocation of cases in the Supreme Court.  The CPI(M) general secretary, Sitaram Yechury, told reporters that the matter of impeachment was being discussed with other opposition parties.

“In this situation, there is no other option but to correct this institution (the Supreme Court) in case there is anything wrong. This can be done by an impeachment motion against the Chief Justice,” he told reporters, as quoted by the news agency IANS.

“We are moving ahead. I think by the time Parliament opens on January 29, the matter will be very clear. We will be moving towards impeachment motion. It is time for the legislature to play its role along with the executive,” he added.

In an unprecedented move on January 12, four senior Supreme Court judges addressed the media to place before the nation their concerns, which, according to them, failed to move the Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.

Unless this institution is preserved, "democracy will not survive" in this country, the four judges had said in an appeal to the nation.
