In the 50s, the construction of Indias first government-sponsored steel plants begins at Bhilai (left) and Rourkela. They are built with assistance from the Soviet Union and the British.. This is the phase when the republic embarks on the path towards Nehrus avowed goal of self-reliance. Basic industries are built through planned development of the public sector. In March 1950, the Planning Commission is established with Nehru as chairman and Gulzarilal Nanda as vice-chairman.
The first Asian to win the Nobel Prize in science in 1930, Sir C.V. Raman inspires a whole generation of young scientists. Raman Effect, his Nobel-winning effort, demystifies many natural phenomena. In 32, he becomes director of the Indian Institute of Science and in 47, founds the Raman Research Institute.
Architect of Indias nuclear programme and founder of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Homi Jehangir Bhabha rules as the high priest of Indian science. Tutored by the likes of Paul Dirac, he does commendable work in cosmic rays. Dies in an aircrash in 1966.
