The Delhi government on Sunday issued a flood warning after Haryana released more than 1,00,000 cusecs of water into Yamuna river from two locations.
"The first warning is being issued as 1,05,453 cusecs of water has been released into river Yamuna from Hathnikund barrage at 4 pm," said Irrigation and Flood Control department in an order
Meanwhile, the Haryana government on Sunday said that it has issued an alert for the release of 3,00,000 cusecs of water. Water has been released from Hathnikund Barrage and Kaushalya Dam in Panchkula.
Earlier, the Central Water Commission (CWC) had said that Yamuna could breach the danger mark of 205.33 metres on Tuesday.
The PTI reported, "According to the CWC's flood-monitoring portal, the water level in the Yamuna at the Old Railway Bridge stood at 203.18 metres at 1 pm on Sunday. The warning level is 204.5 metres. The water level is likely to rise to 205.5 metres between 11 am and 1 pm on Tuesday, the CWC said in an advisory."
Much of North and North-West India is currently in the grips of heavy rainfall. Delhi has received the highest single-day rainfall in 40 years as it recorded 153 mm rain in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Sunday. Waterlogging has been reported at several places in Delhi and the government ordered the closure of all schools on Monday.
In Haryana, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Sunday said the water level of the Kaushalya Dam has risen "significantly" due to heavy rains and 4,000 cusecs of water is being released, reported PTI.
Khattar said that two days of heavy rainfall led to a "significant" rise in the water-level at the dam, and, to manage the water-level, the dams gates have been opened and 4,000 cusecs of water is being released.
Khatter also said that 1,00,000 cusecs of water is also being released from the Hathini Kund Barrage in Yamunanagar district.
Overall, Haryana has issued an alert for release of 3,00,000 cusecs of water, reported PTI.
Haryana, along with neighbouring areas in Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh, has witnessed rainfall that cause waterlogging at places in the state. The situation is particularly severe in Himachal where at least five people have died in rain-related incidents and a red alert is in places. A bridge over Beas River in Mandi was washed away and roads and railways tracks have been damaged.
