The Trinamool Congress has submitted a new request to the Delhi Police, asking for authorization to establish tents and provide lodging for MGNREGA laborers from Bengal who will be participating in a protest at Ram Leela Maidan in Delhi from September 30 to October 4.
In a communication addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in Darya Ganj, Delhi, TMC MP Derek O'Brien stated: "With reference to my letter dated August 30 and August 31, 2023 requesting for permission for the All India Trinamool Congress to set up pandals/tents and arrange accommodation/night stay for about 50,000 people at Ram Leela Maidan from September 30 to October 4, 2023 for MGNREGA workers from Bengal who will be dharna at different locations in Delhi. We are yet to receive a response regarding the same. Request for an update at the earliest," as reported by ABP.
Earlier this month, the TMC leader penned a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Police at the Parliament Street Police Station, alleging that laborers from West Bengal had been deprived of their wages under the MGNREGA scheme.
"With reference to my letter dated August 31, 2023, requesting for permission for the All India Trinamool Congress to hold a dharna involving workers from the State of Bengal who have been denied wages under the MGNREGA scheme from 10 AM to 6 PM on October 2 and October 3, 2023 at Krishi Bhawan. We are yet to receive a response regarding the same. Request for an update at the earliest, the letter read.
Previously, TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee had declared 'Delhi Chalo,' announcing that the party would stage protests in Delhi on October 2 to denounce the central government's withholding of funds owed to the West Bengal government.
Back in July, Abhishek Banerjee had urged the party's local leaders and supporters to encircle the residences of BJP leaders in Bengal on August 5. He asserted that this was the only remaining recourse to demand the release of blocked funds for Bengal, which amounted to nearly Rs 7,000 crore in the context of the 100-day work scheme. He made these remarks during the Trinamool Congress's annual Martyr's Day rally.
