The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data for 2022 reveals that Delhi has recorded the highest number of FIRs related to crimes against women in the country. The national capital documented 14,247 cases, showcasing an increase from the figures in 2020 (10,093) and 2021 (14,277).

In absolute numbers, Uttar Pradesh reported 65,743 cases, Maharashtra 45,331, Rajasthan 45,058, West Bengal 34,738, and Madhya Pradesh 32,765. These five states collectively contributed 50 percent of the total cases nationwide.

The National Crime Records Bureau data again this year brought out a scary picture of India, a country where women are revered as goddesses. In 2022, a total of 4,45,256 cases of crimes against women were registered in India, averaging 51 FIRs per hour. The majority of reported crimes under the Indian Penal Code were related to cruelty by husbands or their relatives (31.4 percent), followed by kidnapping and abduction of women (19.2 percent), assault on women with the intent to outrage her modesty (18.7 percent), and rape (7.1 percent), according to PTI, citing the NCRB.

To be noted, these are only reported cases and one cannot ignore the fact that most of the cases go unreported due to economic and societal pressure.
