Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala has urged the Centre to relax the quality norms of wheat being purchased during Rabi Marketing Season 2023-24. The procurement of wheat started in Haryana from April 1, he said.

In his letter to Consumer Affairs and Food and Public Distribution Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday, Chautala wrote that untimely rains and hailstorm that lashed many parts of the state just before harvesting has flattened and affected the standing crops.

He said that reports have been collected from major procuring districts -- Kaithal, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Fatehabad, Sirsa, Jind, and Yamunanagar -- regarding lustre-loss to the wheat crops due to heavy rains in March. Most farmers were caught by surprise by the repeated rain and hail storm which affected the production and quality of grains, Chautala said in an statement.
