Election Commission Announces Assembly Bypolls On 7 Seats In 6 States, Voting To Take Place On September 5

The model code of conduct has come into effect with the publication of by-elections schedule for seven seats in six states. The votes will be counted on September 8.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday announced the assembly by-election schedule on seven seats in in Jharkhand, Tripura, Kerala, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

The by-elections will be held on September 5 and counting of votes will take place on September 8, according to a press release by the ECI. The by-elections have been necessitated by deaths or resignations of MLAs. 

The seven seats up for by-elections are:

1. Dumri (Jharkhand) 
2. Puthupally (Kerala)
3. Boxanagar (Tripura)
4. Dhanpur (Tripura)
5. Dhupguri (West Bengal)
6. Ghosi (Uttar Pradesh)
7. Bageshwar (Uttarakhand) 

Bageshwar in Uttarakhand and Dhupguri in West Bengal are reserved for scheduled castes (SCs). 

The last date for filing nomination is August 17 and the last date of withdrawing candidature is August 21, according to ECI.

The by-elections in five constituencies are necessitated by the deaths of MLAs: Dumri: Jagarnath Mahto; Puthupally: Oommen Chandy; Boxanagar: Samsul Haque; Dhupguri: Bishnu Pada Ray; Bageshwar: Chandan Ram Das.

The by-elections at Dhanpur and Ghosi are necessitated by the resignations of Pratima Bhoumik and Dara Singh Chauhan respectively. 

The model code of conduct has also come into effect with the publication of by-elections schedule.
