Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh is currently under scrutiny by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in relation to the Delhi liquor policy case. The Rajya Sabha MP has been remanded to five-day custody by a Delhi Court, with the ED branding him a "key conspirator" in the alleged irregularities surrounding the liquor policy, according to media reports.
According to the ED's claims in court, a businessman reportedly gave ₹2 crore to Mr. Singh, forming a crucial part of the money trail connected to the Delhi liquor policy case. The agency further asserted that the AAP leader maintained close connections with various accused individuals, including businessman Dinesh Arora, who has recently become an approver in the case.
The ED presented its case by stating that Singh was part of a criminal conspiracy aimed at providing favors to private individuals through policy formulation. Digital evidence seized from the AAP MP's premises is said to be crucial in the investigation, and the agency plans to confront Singh with this evidence. The ED alleged that the money was delivered by Sarvesh, an employee of Arora, establishing a direct link to the proceeds of the crime.
Special Judge MK Nagpal has granted custody of Mr. Singh to the ED until October 10, allowing the investigative agency to conduct detailed and sustained interrogations. The judge emphasized the necessity for custodial interrogation to trace the complete trail of the proceeds of crime, citing the direct nexus between Singh's activities and the alleged receipt of ₹2 crore.
Sanjay Singh's arrest follows day-long searches at his residence and makes him the second senior AAP leader to be arrested in connection with the liquor policy case, following the arrest of Delhi's former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in February. Sisodia is currently seeking bail in the Supreme Court, which has posed challenging questions to the ED.
In response to Singh's arrest, the AAP has attributed it to the BJP's "frustration" with the Opposition parties uniting under the INDIA bloc in anticipation of the 2024 general elections.
