An FIR has been lodged against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Assam over her recent speech on Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft.

This is the fourth FIR, filed against Mamata over her speech. Earlier on August 3, a case was registered in Assam at Geetanagar Police Station under sections 120 B/153 A/298 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) against Mamata for allegedly delivering "inflammatory speech and attempting to disrupt communal harmony".

Two similar cases were also registered against her at Golaghat Police Station under sections 120(B)/153(A)/109 of IPC and Jagiroad Police Station in Assam.

Ever since the Assam NRC final draft was released, Mamata has been consistently disapproving it, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of vendetta politics ahead of 2019 general elections. She also accused the BJP of conspiracy against minorities.

The Chief Minister, while speaking at an event on July 31 had also said that there will be "civil war and bloodbath" in the country if the issue of the Assam citizen's list is not solved.

The draft, which was released on July 30, left out nearly 40 lakh people in Assam, incorporating names of 2.89 crore people out of 3.29 crore applicants. (ANI)
