Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead near a medical college in UP's Prayagraj, days after his son, Asad Ahmed was killed in a police encounter in Jhansi.
The shooting was caught on camera as mediapersons were following the duo being escorted to the hospital by the police for a medical checkup. At least two persons were seen firing from close range at Atiq and his brother who fell to the ground, while the police soon overpowered the attackers.
Atiq was the main accused in the killing of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the murder of BSP MLA Raju Pal in 2005. Atiq was facing charges as an accused in the Raju Pal murder case.
A former member of the parliament and Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from the Samajwadi Party, Atiq was elected as a legislative assembly member from the Allahabad West constituency for a record five consecutive terms.
On February 24 this year, Umesh Pal, the prime witness in the Raju Pal murder, was attacked and killed along with his police guard who were shot dead in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj. The police registered an FIR against Atiq Ahmed, his wife Sahista Parveen, their two sons, his younger brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf, and others on February 25.
The bullet-riddled bodies of Ahmad and Ashraf were taken away from the spot as tension gripped the area.
