IMD Issues Red Alert For Uttarakhand's 6 Districts, Predicts Very Heavy To Extremely Heavy Rainfall

The red alert is for Dehradun, Nainital, Tehri, Champawat, Pauri, and Udham Singh Nagar districts. The alert was also in place for Sunday.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for six districts of Uttarakhand for very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on Monday. 

The red alert is for Dehradun, Nainital, Tehri, Champawat, Pauri, and Udham Singh Nagar districts. The alert was also in place for Sunday. 

Uttarakhand is currently witnessing heavy rains and very heavy with extremely heavy rainfall have been predicted in the six districts for Monday. 

Intense to very heavy spells of rain with thunder and lightning at isolated places have been forecast, said officials, as per PTI. The agency also reported that the state government has directed their district magistrates (Dos) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to remain alert to assist the people in case of any emergency.

Authorities in Dehradun and Champawat have ordered the closure of schools in the two districts on Monday, reported PTI. 

Landslides triggered by incessant rains have blocked traffic on various roads, including national highways, affecting the movement of people, reported PTI.

"Rishikesh-Chamba National Highway was blocked for traffic due to a landslide near Kunjapuri Bagardhar in Tehri while the movement of heavy vehicles has been stopped on Rishikesh-Devprayag-Srinagar National Highways at Sakhnidhar," reported PTI. 

Since the beginning of the monsoon in Uttarakhand, 60 people have died, 37 have been injured, and 17 are missing in rain-related incidents, according to data from the State Emergency Operation Center. Additionally, PTI reported that 1,169 houses were damaged and a large amount of agricultural land was washed away. Roads and bridges have also suffered a lot of damage due to the rains.
