A 45-year-old man allegedly committed suicide Tuesday by jumping in front of a train at the busy Rajiv Chowk metro station in Delhi, police said.
The incident during the morning rush hour disrupted metro services for 15-20 minutes on the Blue Line, which connects Dwarka to Noida in Uttar Pradesh. Police said they were informed about the incident at 9.34 am.
Officials said Pramod Kumar, a resident of the city's Sirsapur area, committed suicide by jumping in front of a train going towards Noida City Centre.
He was rushed to Lady Hardinge hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Delhi Metro) Dinesh Gupta said.
Officials said they were investigating the matter and examining CCTV footage of the incident.
A senior police official said Kumar used to work at the ESI hospital in Rohini but had left his job some time ago.
"His wife had left him about five years ago, and they did not have any child. At present, he was jobless, has no family and lived alone. He was travelling to Noida to withdraw his provident fund," the officer said.
"Though his family members are not sure about the step taken by him, but, prima facie, circumstances indicate that he jumped before a train as he was troubled," the officer said.
Located at Delhi's Connaught Place, Rajiv Chowk is an interchange station which sees footfall of lakhs of commuters everyday. The Blue Line meets the Yellow Line at this station. The Yellow Line of the Delhi Metro connects Gurgaon in Haryana to Samaypur Badli, a suburb in north Delhi.
