A prime accused in the killing of police Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh by a mob following cow slaughter in December in Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahr was arrested on Tuesday, police said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prabhakar Chowdhary told IANS the accused -- Kalua, was arrested from a far-flung village of Bulandshahr in the early hours of Tuesday after the police received information about his presence there.

Kalua, who is being interrogated, is accused of hitting Singh with an axe on the head. The police Inspector was later shot by Prashant Nat, who is already in police custody.

On December 3, 2018, a mob of some 400 people violently rampaged through the Chingrawathi village, apparently after cow carcasses were found strewn in a jungle nearby.

The mob had set dozens of vehicles on fire, hurled stones and even fired from guns at the police, who also retaliated with gunfire.

Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh, who was posted at Siana Police Station, suffered a gunshot injury in addition to wounds from hard and blunt objects, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Anand Kumar said, citing the post-mortem report.
