A Guwahati-based senior journalist, who was attacked while cycling home last month, succumbed to his head injuries at a city hospital on Monday.
Naresh Mitra, who worked with The Times of India Guwahati bureau, had sustained skull injuries and was on ventilator support.
The incident occurred on November 22 when the 45-year-old journalist, renowned for his reportage on environment and wildlife, was on his way back home on a bicycle from his office located at ABC area of the city.
On finding him profusely bleeding from one of his ears, some people rushed him to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital. Later, he was shifted to the private hospital by his family.
Initially, it was believed that Mitra may have been hit from behind by a vehicle. But doctors who operated on him later said it was more likely to have been a case of assault.
The Journalists' Forum Assam (JFA) demanded a thorough probe into the case. "We strongly demand a high-level probe into the incident where Naresh got injured that night. Moreover, we wish his early recovery and express a hope that he would be able to explain the situation soon," the statement read.
