The National Electronic Toll Collection programme, the flagship initiative of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, has been implemented on a pan-India basis in order to remove bottlenecks and ensure seamless movement of traffic and collection of user fee as per the notified rates, using passive radio frequency identification technology.

The ministry has directed to declare all lanes of fee plazas on national highways as 'FASTag lanes' by December 1. The toll plazas on the national highways across the country would be accepting only digital payments through FASTags stickers.

Here Is All You Need To Know About FASTag

1. FASTag can be bought through banks, authorised dealers, FASTag app (available on android and IoS) and Common Services Centres near toll plazas.

The minimum recharge amount for FASTag is Rs100 and maximum Rs1 lakh. Users will get SMS alerts for all their toll transactions at toll plazas. The tag has lifetime validity and is vehicle specific. Two-wheelers, autorickshaws and other small vehicles that do not have to pay toll presently do not require the FASTag.

2. Vehicle owners will need to produce a copy of Vehicle Registration certificate, a passport-size photograph and ID and address proof to acquire a FASTag.

3. An amount of Rs 100 is taken as a charge for cards. Rs 200 is taken as a refundable deposit, while the remaining amount is retained as balance in the card. The government has exempted the Rs 100 charge till November 30.

4. The FASTags come in different prices and colours, depending on the type of vehicle.
