Legendary Pakistani Urdu poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz's nazm, "Hum Dekhenge", has sparked a controversy after it was recited by some students, who extended solidarity to their Jamia Millia Islamia and AMU counterparts, on IIT Kanpur campus. The IIT students expressed their displeasure over police action against students on December 15.
An INSPIRING faculty expressed objection to a few lines of the poem and even filed a complaint with the administration of the institute, saying it "assaulted Hindu belief".
Following the complaint, IIT-Kanpur formed a committee to inquire into all the complaints, including the one against the recitation of "Hum Dekhenge" on campus.
A radio jockey, RJ Sayema, has shared a video on Twitter with the translation of the poem and explained the context and time it was written in.
