War spoils:Dead Pakistani soldiers and demolished tanks on the Punjab border during the 1965 Indo-Pak war (above); Prime Minister Shastri visits forward areas during the conflict. On September 1,1965, Pakistan launches Operation Grand Slam in a bid to wrest Kashmir. A fierce tank battle is fought in Sialkot. A spirited Indian army wins this encounter as its tanks reach within three miles of Lahore. This is the crowning glory of Shastri’s brief tenure.

Inspired by India’s victory in war and a meeting with Shastri,Manoj Kumar takes up the Jai Jawan Jai Kisan slogan for his directorial debut

‘Upkaar’. Oozing patriotic fervour, the film’s theme song ‘Mere Desh Ki Dharti’ assumes anthemic proportions. Kumar becomes cine-Bharat.

In 1967,the party, which was formed in 1949,wins the Madras state assembly elections on the anti-Hindi plank. C.N. Annadurai is sworn in chief minister.
