The traffic on either side has to cross the 98-year-old British-made rail bridge alternately since only one vehicle can pass at a time. Delays of two hours are common. The Punjab government has not been able to find the money to replace this relic of the Raj, which till 1965 was used only by army vehicles. Opened for civilian traffic for two hours each in the morning and evening as a sign outside the gateman’s hut indicates, the bridge remains open for road traffic throughout the day till 8 pm. At night, this link to Ferozepur and the areas lying beyond is closed. Says gateman Harbhajan Singh, "But we do risk obliging fellow villagers during emergencies."
