The Kolkata Police have arrested two more students who are allegedly involved in the ragging and subsequent death of an 18-year-old Jadavpur University student earlier this week.

A day after the police made their first arrest of an ex-student of the university, they arrested two more students. These two students are identified as Deepshekhar Dutta who is a second-year student in the Economics department and Manotosh Ghosh who is a second-year student in the Sociology department.

The person arrested before them was Sourabh Chowdhury who is a former student of the university and had been illegally staying in the hostel after he completed his MSc in Mathematics in 2022.

According to the reports, the police have added a sexual harassment angle in their investigation for intense ragging which allegedly resulted in the death of the 18-year-old.

The other students of the university have put up social media posts claiming that students often face harassment in the form of lewd remarks and are forced to perform sexual acts as a part of their ragging which the police have taken cognisance of, reportedly.

What happened at Jadavpur University's main hostel?

Swapnadip Kundu who was a first-year student of Bengali (Honours) allegedly took a fall from the balcony of the main hostel building of Jadavpur University on August 9 at around 11:45 pm.

Kundu was rushed to the hospital but around 4:30 am he succumbed to his injuries there.

According to the reports the uncle of the deceased, Arup Kundu told NDTV that he made a call to his mother telling her to take him back from there and an hour later his parents got a call about his fall from the balcony. Kundu reportedly said, "Swapnadip spoke to his mother on Wednesday evening and told her he was not feeling good and was scared. His mother asked him what had happened and he said, 'You please come fast. I have lots of things to tell you.' When she called him back, the calls went unanswered. About an hour later, his parents got a call asking them to come to Kolkata as their son had suffered a fall."

Further Kundu said, "The body was completely covered but the doctor showed me a piece of paper which indicated injury marks on his body. How does this happen if it was not ragging?"

Ramprasad Kundu, Swarnadip's father has filed a police complaint where he alleged that ragging by some of the hostellers is the reason behind the death of his son.

In a PTI report, a classmate of Swarnadip, Arpan Majhi has spoken about ragging by some of the senior students of the university.
