A statement announcing the actor-politician Kamal Haasan's party Makkal Nithi Maiam's (MNM) merger with Congress left the party workers surprised before the party's Twitter handle announced that the official website of the party had been hacked by "miscreants".

The statement on www.maiam.com announced a merger of MNM with the Congress on January 30.

The statement on merger has since been withdrawn.

A party spokesperson told news reporters "No such decision was made [on the merger] and that it was the handiwork of the hackers."

The rumours of MNM's merger with Congress gathered steam when Kamal Haasan joined Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Yatra last month.

Recently, MNM announced its support for the Congress candidate in the Erode East by-election scheduled for February 27.
