Kashmir's mountains received a welcomed respite with light snowfall, and the plains witnessed light rainfall on Sunday, bringing an end to the prolonged dry spell over the past two months.

Reports of snowfall emerged from various areas, including Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonmarg, Gurez, Macchil, Karnah Doodpathri, and Shopian, with intermittent snowfall continuing.

Over the last two days, Kashmir has experienced a shift in weather conditions, with anticipated rain and snow and improvements in night temperatures.

The meteorological department of Jammu & Kashmir forecasts the possibility of light to moderate rain/snow at many places on January 30-31, with chances of heavy snowfall over a few higher reaches in these seven districts.

Residents expressed relief as the dry slopes and tree tops were blanketed with snow in the upper reaches, while the plains were refreshed by light rains in some areas of the Himalayan valley.

Tourists were spotted enjoying the picturesque winter wonderland of Daksum along the historic Mughal Road, engaging in snow fights and sledding on fresh snow carpets, as reported by Greater Kashmir.

The meteorological update noted that the minimum temperature in the capital, Srinagar, on the intervening nights of Saturday and Sunday was recorded above zero at 3.3 degrees Celsius, up from minus 2.3 degrees Celsius a night earlier.

Owing to climate change, Jammu and Kashmir endured a prolonged dry spell amid the harsh winter, with minimal precipitation since December. January was, by and large, dry until now.
