In an untoward incident, four students were killed in a stampede at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) during a music concert on Saturday evening while several others sustained injuries, officials said.

As per media reports, the music concert featured playback singer Nikhita Gandhi and it was held at the university's open-air auditorium during a Tech Fest.

It has been reported that the emergency services responded promptly and transported the injured students to Kalamassery Medical College for treatment.

Preliminary report revealed that the students who were standing at the back during the concert suddenly rushed to the front of the stage when it started raining as there was no shade at the back of the auditorium.

This led to a surge in the crowd at the front and is believed to have trigerred the stampede-like situation at the university.
