In a significant development, the primary suspect involved in the assault on a female constable aboard the Saryu Express train met his demise during a police encounter, while two other alleged accomplices sustained injuries, according to a senior official's statement on Friday.
Prashant Kumar, the Special DG in charge of law and order, "Anish, identified as the key suspect in the case of the attack on a female constable during her journey on the Saryu Express, was wounded in a confrontation with law enforcement personnel in Pura Kalandar, Ayodhya. Regrettably, he later succumbed to his injuries," PTI reported.
The law enforcement officer further stated, "His two associates, Azad and Vishambhar Dayal Dubey, also suffered injuries and have been taken into custody."
The incident, involving the assault on the woman constable, took place on August 30 within a compartment of the Saryu Express. Subsequently, she was admitted to a hospital in Lucknow, where her condition is reported to be stable.
Promptly responding to the incident, a case was registered with the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Ayodhya on the same day. The authorities launched a concerted effort to identify and apprehend the suspects in the case, mobilizing the Special Task Force (STF) in conjunction with local police and the GRP. This intensified effort followed the suo motu cognisance taken by the Allahabad High Court in response to the incident.
