Opposition members in the Lok Sabha vociferously demanded a government statement regarding the recent security breach in Parliament. Speaker Om Birla, emphasizing the Lok Sabha Secretariat's role in Parliament complex security, adjourned proceedings amid ongoing protests.
On Wednesday, two individuals breached security, entering the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors' gallery, causing chaos by shouting slogans and releasing yellow smoke canisters. Speaker Birla assured the House that the security of the Parliament complex falls under the Lok Sabha Secretariat's jurisdiction.
Despite the disruptions, Birla expressed readiness to discuss the security breach issue with the Opposition. Deputy Leader of the House and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called for unity in condemning the incident, urging members not to disrupt the proceedings.
Opposition members, demanding a government statement, began protests as soon as the House convened for the day. The Question Hour witnessed disruptions, leading to the adjournment of proceedings until 2 pm.
Following the security breach, Speaker Birla ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. The Ministry of Home Affairs also initiated a probe, responding to a request from the Lok Sabha Secretariat. The inquiry committee, led by CRPF Director General Anish Dayal Singh, aims to identify security lapses and recommend appropriate actions.
As of Today, eight personnel have been suspended in connection with the lapses, according to sources. The inquiry remains ongoing.
