The Supreme Court has adjourned plea seeking re-investigation of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination and asked the petitioner to satisfy it on aspects of delay and locus.

"Don't get carried away with greatness of the person involved. Court will act according to law. Due to the delay, every piece of evidence has been lost and almost all witnesses in the case have passed away," the court said.

The apex court has granted four weeks to the petitioner to respond to report of amicus curiae, who said no re-investigation is required in case.

Senior advocate Amarendra Sharan was appointed amicus curiae last October to assist the Supreme Court in a public interest litigation seeking re-investigation into the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi.

A researcher and a trustee of Abhinav Bharat, had sought reopening of the probe on several grounds, claiming it was one of the biggest cover-ups in history.

Gandhi was shot dead at point blank range in New Delhi on January 30, 1948 by Nathuram Vinayak Godse, a right-wing advocate of Hindu nationalism.
